About the Guide
 |
The purpose of Summit Routes is to provide you,
the reader,
with a comprehensive guide to climbing the geographically and geologically diverse
high points of Washington. This book arose out of necessity. As climbing partners, we,
the authors, have spent literally thousands of hours sitting at the kitchen table,
surrounded by precarious stacks of maps and books so high that a collapse promised sure
death. The irony of our circumstances didn't escape us. To climb the high points of
Washington is to get away from it all and experience the grandeur and beauty of its
wonderful wilderness. Yet here we were, before every outing, engaged in a laborious
activity that would do a Federal bureaucrat proud. We persevered because we knew the
great reward that awaited us when we left the trailhead and we have never been disappointed. But each time, upon our return, we faced the task of planning the next outing with some
dread. "Wow," we thought, "I really wish there was a book on this." Well, here is that book! It's the product of our near-death experiences at the kitchen table and the life-giving,
real-world experiences of ourselves and many friends and fellow climbers whose feet have
tramped the trails, slogged the scree and glided the glaciers to the remote corners of
this incredible wilderness. We think that all but the most ardent bibliophiles
will appreciate the information that will get you away from your kitchen table and
out into the mountains where you really want to be anyway. Whether you are interested in
climbing all 100 of these peaks or just selecting individual ones, this guide is for you.
It contains a wealth of information to help you embark on an incredible journey through
the Cascades, one of America's greatest alpine mountain ranges.
